Overview

The West Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek is one of the most remote, wild, and beautiful trekking adventures in western Nepal. Hidden beyond the famous Dhaulagiri massif, this untouched Himalayan valley offers an extraordinary journey through alpine meadows, deep forests, traditional villages, and spectacular glacier landscapes.

This region is widely known as the common base camp area for several remarkable peaks including Churen Himal, Putha Hiunchuli, Putha Shoulder, Gurja Himal, Ghustung South, and Dhaulagiri VI. Most of the mountains surrounding the valley rise above 7,000 meters, creating an impressive panorama of massive snow-covered peaks and rugged Himalayan terrain.

For many years, the classical access route to the region followed the historic Gurjakhani trail. Today, several new trekking approaches have opened through Jaljala in Myagdi, Dhorpatan in Baglung, and Maikot in Eastern Rukum. Among these options, the route starting from Dhorpatan and returning via Jaljala is considered one of the most scenic and rewarding trekking circuits.

The mountains of West Dhaulagiri rise dramatically to the north of Dhorpatan, forming a hidden alpine world rarely visited by trekkers. The area is especially famous for expeditions to Putha Hiunchuli and Churen Himal. While most climbers now approach Putha Hiunchuli from the Dolpo side, Churen Himal is still commonly climbed from the western valley.

Unlike Nepal’s more crowded trekking regions, West Dhaulagiri remains peaceful, authentic, and largely unexplored. Trekkers can experience untouched nature, rich Magar culture, high mountain passes, yak pastures, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery without the busy trails found elsewhere.

This trek is ideal for adventurous travellers seeking a true wilderness experience in one of Nepal’s hidden Himalayan frontiers.

Climbing and Exploration History

The West Dhaulagiri region has long been known for climbing expeditions to Putha Hiunchuli and Churen Himal. Today, most climbers approach Putha Hiunchuli from the Dolpo side, while Churen Himal is still commonly climbed from the western side.

Dhaulagiri VI was first climbed in 1970 by a Japanese expedition led by Tetsuya Nomura. During their expedition, they produced one of the earliest sketch maps of the West Dhaulagiri region.

Later, local mountain guides and route explorers from Rukum worked continuously from 2011 to 2016 to explore trekking routes and produce a more detailed tourist map called West Dhaulagiri & Kanjirwa. Their goal was to promote this hidden Himalayan region as a new trekking destination.

Today, the area remains quiet, unspoiled, and ideal for trekkers seeking wilderness, authentic culture, and remote Himalayan scenery.

Conclusion

West Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek is a perfect adventure for trekkers looking for a true wilderness experience in Nepal. The route combines remote Himalayan scenery, rich local culture, historical climbing heritage, and spectacular mountain panoramas in one unforgettable journey.
